Apart from the validation benefit, LrC works faster with such files, compared to raws. The DNGs from the iPhone Lr app, need to be re-converted, for example. You can use a smart collection to check for these files. But not all camera generated DNGs offer this option: you may need to re-convert them to DNGs with Fast Load data from within LrC. If this (99.9% of the total size) part of the DNG is OK, chances are that the rest (which contains the embeded xmp data etc) will also be OK. One of the best reasons to use DNGs is that their unchanging raw data can get hushed and later validated, from within LrC, to check for any future data corruption. But modern backup solutions can offer delta transfers and deduplication (only the changed part -not the whole DNG - gets transferred / backed up again)
But keeping the pairs (raw-xmp) in sync might be quite a task, especially tracking down deletions, renaming etc. The other reason is if you want to backup the raws once (upload to some Cloud, burn to M-disk Bluray, etc) and then only to have to backup the changed xmps.

The one reason to keep your original raw is if you use the camera manufacturer's special software which uses hidden, undocumented information, stored inside the raw file. Any current photo apps that don't already support DNGs do it because they have their own motives, not because they can't.
That may not be the case with the raws of all camera models, ever produced. There isn't any (technical) reason a future photo app shouldn't support it.

Space would go up to like 5 MB, for the number of heic I would be ok with that. but what about, listen this: heic conversion to dng lossy with the original heic embedded? Now, space is kinda not a problem, but I don't want to to throw it away without sense: convert a 1 MB heic to a 20 MB dng raw is too much waste to me. I could even keep updated dng preview, that can make the dng kinda viewable to other computers and people not tech savvy. But I could convert everything to dng and keep all the metadata and history of editings inside the picture, preventing from losing them (as appened before during some library moving and conversion.).
I'd really like to keep untouched originals and an optimized backup of only xmp sidecars, but I can't with the original dng. For me, the point to have original raws or convert to dng is: do I want xmp sidecars or embedded metadata? With all those different sources, I can achieve neither.
I have different source for my pictures, Sony and Panasonic raw, iPhone and DJI drones dng, iPhone heic, other jpeg.
